Class Description
Beyond the Block is a 4‑week pattern‑cutting course designed for dressmakers who already have their own blocks and want to take the next step into creative pattern development.
Across the four weeks, you will explore a range of bodice adaptations — including options such as princess seams and collar variations — before developing your own design. You will test your pattern in calico, refine the fit, and produce a complete, ready‑to‑use pattern for your chosen garment.
This course focuses on practical skills, creative decision‑making, and understanding how style lines transform a basic block into a unique design.
Is this right for me?
This course is ideal if you:
- Already have a set of personal blocks (bodice and, if relevant, skirt)
- Want to learn how to adapt blocks into new styles
- Enjoy experimenting with design lines and garment shaping
- Are ready to move beyond following commercial patterns
- Want guided support while developing your own pattern from concept to completion
- If you do not yet have blocks, you may use a standard size 12 block provided in class.
You should have experience using a commercial pattern. You should also have basic garment construction skills as these are not taught during the course. There is some maths/working with numbers involved in this class related to your measurements.
What do I need to bring?
- Your own bodice block (and skirt block if you plan to incorporate it)
- Notebook and pen
- Any design inspiration you’d like to explore (optional)
If you do not have your own blocks, a standard size 12 block will be available for you to work from.
What’s included?
- Use measuring tools and equipment.
- Use of sewing machines and tools.
- Pattern paper.
- Fabric for making a toile.
